A folding lighting mast comprises a base 2, a pivotable mast member 3 and a locking element. A driving mechanism moves the locking element between locked and unlocked conditions, thus securing or releasing the mast to pivot. The pivot axis of the mast may be offset from the locking element. The locking element may comprise one or more pins 51 that co-operate with one or more apertures. The driving mechanism may be pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical or electromagnetic. An actuator 7 may be used to drive the rotation of the mast. A sensor system may be used to detect whether the locking element is in the locked or unlocked condition, and whether the mast is raised or lowered. The locking element may include a cover to restrict access.
