An inertial electromechanical actuator able to operate in at least two degrees of freedom (DoF), including at least one translation, comprises an inertial proof mass 2 resiliently mounted by springs 4 to a support frame 6. The proof mass may be a steel cube 6 with permanent magnets 8 mounted on each face of the cube 6. The magnets interact with coils 10 so that a force can be applied to the mass in any direction. The frame 6 of the actuator 1 may be attached to a structure, and can be used for damping vibrations in the structure. Alternatively, the system may be used as a generator to generate electricity when the system is subjected to accelerations.
