A method of transmitting uplink positioning reference signals (UL PRS) from a mobile terminal to a serving base station, gNB, and one or more neighbouring base stations, gNBs, in a 5G New Radio system. The method comprises: receiving UL PRS configuration information from the serving gNB, and transmitting the PRS to the serving gNB and neighbouring gNBs in accordance with the configuration. The configuration information includes an indication of one or more of: a timing advance for the transmission of the UL PRS, a transmission pattern of the UL PRS, a time domain placement of the UL PRS; a quasi-colocation assumption for transmission of the UL PRS, and UL PRS beamforming alignment information. The one or more timing advances may be based on: a maximum of the propagation delay to the serving gNB and the neighbouring gNBs; an average of the propagation delays; or a weighted average of the propagation delays. The terminal may receive downlink signals from the gNBs, determine the beams used to receive these signals, and use said beams to transmit the UL PRS. Also disclosed are methods of transmitting PRS configuration information from a serving cell to a UE and neighbouring base stations.
