An illumination system for use in growing a photosynthetic organism (e.g. algae). The system comprises a waterproof housing 104, a light source 101 (e.g. LED) that illuminates the length of the housing, and a diffuser 106 within the housing. The housing has a longitudinal length that is greater than its width. The diffuser has a narrow end directed towards the light source and a wider end away from the light source. The diffuser has a diffusive reflective surface that diffusively reflects light from the light source to outside the housing. The diffuser can be cone shaped. The housing can comprise a light redirecting film such as a prismatic film with specified prism angles. The prisms can run along the length of the film in the axial direction of the housing wherein the prisms face inwards. The system can comprise a heat management system 102 (e.g. fan, liquid cooling system). The system can have a phosphor layer. The light source can be collimated using optics 103. The system can have an additional housing (513, fig 4a) between the light source and the housing. The additional housing can have an internally reflecting film, a diffuser and an additional light source.
