System comprising a handheld barcode reader 106 with a unique identifier 118 and an augmented reality (AR) adapter (102 figure 1). The adapter comprises a camera (114 figure 1) with a field of view (FOV) (116 figure 1) and a presentation generator (120 figure 1) for providing an AR display based on first data captured by the barcode reader. The location of the AR display on the presentation generator is based on the location of identifier 118 within the FOV. The system further comprises a memory to store non-transitory computer executable instructions (128 figure 1) and a processor configured to interface with the presentation generator, camera, and memory. The processor executes the instructions to: analyse images captured by the camera, identify the identifier, receive second data based on the first data captured by the barcode reader, and cause the presentation generator to display third data, based on second data, at a time substantially simultaneous to the time at which the first data was captured. Images may be analysed to detect a user selection which may be used to modify the AR display by detecting: movement of the identifier, light emitted by the barcode reader, or obstruction of a target.
