Methods and apparatus for enhancing the configurability of 5G new radio positioning reference signals

A method for transmitting a Positioning Reference Signal, PRS, by a base station operating a cell in a 5G New Radio, NR, wireless communication system. The method comprises determining a resource allocation from time and frequency resources of the cell for the transmission of the PRS and subsequent transmission of the PRS using the determined resource allocation. A terminal device in a cell identifies the resource allocation of the time and frequency resources for transmission of the PRS by the base station and determines a position measurement for the terminal device based on the received PRS. The determined position measurement can then be transmitted from the device to the base station.
