Based on instructions that are received from a separate connected computer 20, an electronic hearing test device 10 generates audio from sound files stored in its memory. In this way, a hearing test can be managed by a computer 20, but the audio delivered to the test subject is generated by a dedicated electronic device 10. The electronic hearing testing device comprises: memory for storing a plurality of sound files; an input 110 for connecting the hearing testing device 10 to a computer 20 and for receiving instructions 21 from the computer 20; an output 31for connecting the hearing testing device 10 to headphones 30 and processing circuitry configured retrieve a sound file identified by the instruction from the memory and generate audio from the retrieved sound file, and to output the audio. The computer may display a graphical user interface showing a plurality of images associated with one of a plurality of sounds, or no sound.
