PURPOSE:To satisfactorily divide an area for an input color picture at high speed by providing a linear linkage arithmetic means, a space division information memory, a means for converting data for area division, an area division result memory, a density average vector calculation means and a control means. CONSTITUTION:The titled processor has a linear linkage processor 17 executing linear linkage operations for dividing an area, the space division information memory 18 storing information for dividing the space of n(n-1)/2 bits as separate picture elements, a data conversion processor 19 which sequentially takes out space division information as separate picture elements from said memory 18, and converts data for dividing an area into density information showing as a density value (k) that the picture element concerned belongs to which area among n-areas (k) (k=0,1,...n-1), the area division result memory 20 storing converted and outputted density information as separate picture elements, and a histogram arithmetic processor 21. They are connected to a CPU 11 through a control bus 22.
