This application describes a method and system for generating a velocity model for an underground area, the method and system including a computer implemented method, a computer program product, and a computer system. A computer implemented method is a step of obtaining a source wave field and a residual wave field in a data processing device, the source wave field and the residual wave field being based on seismic data associated with an underground area. Calculated;; decomposing the source wavefield and the residual wavefield into subterranean azimuth and reflection angle domains by a data processor; and the decomposed source wavefield by a data processor And calculating a plurality of gradient direction components based on the residual wave field; scaling the plurality of gradient direction components based on an azimuth angle and an angle associated with each of the plurality of gradient direction components by a data processing device. A step of calculating a gradient direction based on the scaled gradient direction component; and a step of generating a velocity model using the gradient direction.
