To provide relatively non-invasive devices and methods for heating or cooling a patient's body and to provide devices and methods for treating ischemic conditions by inducing therapeutic hypothermia.SOLUTION: An esophageal heat transfer device includes: a supply tube 310 and a return tube 312 defining a fluid path of a heat transfer medium; a heat transfer region adjacent to the fluid path arranged at a distal end, and configured for directly contacting esophageal epithelium of a subject so as to transmit heat between the heat transfer medium and the esophagus when the heat transfer medium flows the fluid path adjacent to the heat transfer region, when the distal end is positioned in the esophagus of the subject; and a hollow tube extending beyond the heat transfer region of the distal end and configured for extending into the stomach of the subject for gastric ventilation when the distal end is positioned in the esophagus of the subject.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
