Apparatus for measurement of the outline of a moving object which is formed of a toroidal structure (1) provided with an entrance aperture leading to an internal measuring zone (Z). The measuring zone (Z) is provided with a circumferentially configured source of radiation (3) which generates a screen of radiation (R) across the entrance aperture through which the object (2) passes in its path of travel. The emitted radiation (R) from the object is analysed by image anaysis to provide measurements of the physical characteristics of the object (2).
