To provide novel therapeutic agents for sepsis or septic shock.SOLUTION: The invention provides a composition for preventing or treating sepsis or septic shock comprising, as an effective component, at least one of interferon beta 1a or interferon beta 1b being an inducer of SIRT1 (silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog) expression. The inducer of SIRT1 expression can remarkably reduce the mortality caused by sepsis or septic shock by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, the inducer of SIRT1 expression is useful for use in preventing or treating sepsis or septic shock.SELECTED DRAWING: None
