PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one of demands for characteristics such as a high maximum temperature, a low minimum temperature, a low viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, and large dielectric anisotropy, or having an appropriate balance in at least two of the above characteristics, and an AM element including the composition.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a specific compound having positive dielectric anisotropy as a first component and a specific compound having negatively large dielectric anisotropy as a second component, and the composition may contain a specific compound having a high maximum temperature or a low viscosity as a third component, or a specific compound having negatively large dielectric anisotropy and a low minimum temperature as a fourth component.SELECTED DRAWING: None
