The invention relates to a method for determining a particular occupancy state of a plurality of parking spaces in a parking area and for identifying a motor vehicle parked in one of the plurality of parking spaces using a further motor vehicle, wherein the further motor vehicle has one or more environment sensors, comprising the following steps of: capturing an environment of the further motor vehicle during a journey of the further motor vehicle within the parking area by means of the one or more environment sensors in order to determine environment data corresponding to the captured environment, determining a particular occupancy state of the plurality of parking spaces on the basis of the environment data, and, if a motor vehicle parked in one of the plurality of parking spaces is detected, identifying the parked motor vehicle.
