Aspects of the present disclosure specify a resource element (RE) over which a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) may be transmitted, along with a set of ports at a base station from which CSI-RS may be transmitted. Provides RS resources. Within the set of ports for a particular CSI-RS resource, one or more port groups may be further configured. Each port group identifies a group of ports associated with the channel. In some examples, the port group identifies the ports on which the CSI may be measured. Other ports within the set of ports outside the port group may be utilized for interference measurements.
