Limitations of customer-oriented networks in distributed systems

A method and apparatus for supporting the limits of customer-oriented networks in a distributed system is disclosed. A client request is received via a programmatic interface indicating a particular low resource usage limit imposed on at least one category of network traffic in a particular instance of a network accessible service. Resource usage metrics for one or more categories of network traffic in a particular instance are obtained. One or more response actions are initiated in response to determining that resource usage at a particular instance has reached a threshold level. [Selection diagram]
