[Problem] To provide: a dispersion that can improve the light extraction efficiency of a light emitting device and that contains metal oxide particles having a refractive index of at least 1.7 and a surface-modifying material attached thereto; a composition that contains the dispersion; a sealing material that is formed using the composition; a light emitting device that has the sealing material; a lighting device and a display device that are provided with the light emitting device; and a method for producing the light emitting device. [Solution] Provided is a dispersion for sealing a light emitting element, wherein: the dispersion contains metal oxide particles having a refractive index of at least 1.7 and a surface-modifying material at least a portion of which is attached to the metal oxide particles; the particle diameter D50 of the metal oxide particles, which is the particle diameter when the cumulative percentage in the scattering intensity distribution provided by a dynamic light scattering technique is 50%, is 30 nm to 100 nm; and the content of the surface-modifying material not attached to the metal oxide particles, with reference to the content of the total of the metal oxide particles and the surface-modifying material, is not more than 60 mass%.
