Standard uptake value (SUV) guided reconstruction control to improve robustness of results in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging

The nuclear medicine image reconstruction method generates a reconstructed image 44 by performing iterative image reconstructions 30, 130 on the nuclear medicine image data 22. Iterative image reconstruction produces a sequence of updated images 34, 36, 134, 136. During iterative image reconstruction, a standard uptake value (SUV) transform 40 is applied to transform the updated images 34, 36 into updated SUV images 42, 46. The SUV transform scales the voxel values of the updated image to SUV values using a scaling factor that includes at least a body size metric and a dose metric. During iterative image reconstruction, at least one parameter used for image updating of the iterative image reconstruction is adjusted using the updated SUV image. For example, the lookahead information incorporated in the image reconstruction update step 32 or used in the filtering of the updated image 36 or the parameters of the filter 38 may be adjusted.
