In general, the branching configuration used in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems, consistent with the present disclosure, is a multi-port DC / DC capable of multiple modes of operation for bidirectional power distribution. It includes a power supply branch unit (PFBU) (118-3) having a DC converter (DDCM) mechanism (501/518). The DDCM mechanism (501/518) is electrically coupled to one or more trunk route cable segments (114-3, 114-4) and to the branch cable segment (113). Can include a plurality of ports (626-1, 626-2, 626-3). A plurality of PFBUs (118-3, 118-4, 118-5, 118-6) may be arranged along the main route (112), and each PFBU has each branch route necessarily a local power supply equipment (PFE). Power the associated branch path, even if not having. In the case where the branch path includes a local PFE (190), the associated PFBU can draw power from the branch path to make power available to the trunk path as needed.
