In the case of a known device for cleaning workpieces by means of a steam jet, the steam is generated from a supply of liquid water. A device of this type is sluggish and not efficient in energy terms. Here, a device for cleaning workpieces by way of a steam jet is proposed, having a special steam generator (1), in the case of which the steam is generated in a hollow-cylindrical core (2), the outer side of which is heated and onto the inner side of which the water to be evaporated is sprayed by means of a nozzle (6). The proposed steam generator (1) has an additional heating device (10) with a heatable body (10A) which has a cavity (11) which can be flowed through for reheating purposes by steam (13) which is generated upstream, in order to generate dry steam (14) for dry steam cleaning. An automated cleaning system having said steam generator is also proposed. The device can be adapted flexibly to the requirements of automated synchronized production, and requires, in particular, less energy and a smaller installation area. The invention can be applied, inter alia, in industrial cleaning in machine engineering, in particular in the case of the production of automotive parts.
