The first of January ushered in a new era for the health services inudIreland. The Health Service Executive commenced its role as theudsingle accountable body for the delivery of health services. Theudwork of the National Council will continue in the new environmentud– all the staff of the Council look forward to continuing to deliverudprofessional development services in a way that contributes toudthe achievement of the overall objectives of the services.udOne of the central roles of the National Council is to work closelyudwith the nursing and midwifery planning and development unitsudwithin each region, to plan and make provision for additionaludfunding for continuing education. This is the fifth year in whichudthe Council has fulfilled this role. This funding is over and aboveudthe normal funding that each region has available to it for thisudpurpose. It is intended to be used to address areas of continuingudeducation that might not normally be funded. Thus, for example,udone of the most important functions of this funding would be toudensure that greater access to post-registration training andudeducation is provided to nurses and midwives outside of theudgreater population areas.
