Work, the Family and the Household : Hired Workers in Traditional Societies - The custom of placing persons, especially children and adolescents, into service was widespread in traditional European societies. This study focuses on Northern Burgundy in the later Middle Ages. From the various kinds of services and contracts formalizing the transfer of individuals from one household to another, the inference may be drawn that it was primarily the work patterns which shaped relationships between the hirers and the hired, and that the latter were often considered and treated as dependents.
