Le processus de formation d'une opposition politique et nationale en Biélorussie : le Front populaire biélorussien (1988-1991)

Created in the 1980s to support the Perestroika, popular fronts have gradually become autonomous political organizations with transforming the Soviet Republics into national states as their major objective. Relations with local Communists have largely determined their evolution. Unlike the Baltic popular fronts, which allied with national Communists, the Belarusian Popular Front took up more radical positions in reaction to local leaders' conservativism. Thus placed on the margins, it was unable to profit from Communist networks and structures so as to come to power. However it has helped make changes in Belarusian politics, in particular by goading local elites into adjusting to political changes.
