François Bizot The place of the communities of North Laos in the history of South-East Asian Buddhism This article treats the history of South-East Asian Buddhism with a view to making plain how it differs from the Singhalese tradition. It is particularly about the transmission of ordination among the communities of the North of the Indo-chinese peninsula. It emphasises a Buddhist tradition that is Indian by comparison with the Singhalisation that took place from the 15th century. This Singhalisation brought about a "Pali-isation" of the religious institutions, thus covering up beliefs and practices in local languages that probably derived from Mūlasarvāstivādin communities and that one finds still living today in the Buddhist traditions of the Far East (Tibet, China, Japan).
