Interdisciplinarity between traditional sciences is a characteristic feature ofenvironmental problems. Problem-solving paradigms and philosophies are drawn from different traditions, and conflicts occur often. The field of application of the work was surface water eutrophication. Three shallow Finnish lakes were studied, using computational approaches from three families of techniques. First, from the family of empiristic, statistical approaches, the study used multivariate techniques to investigate the phytoplankton communities and their relation to environmental variables. Second, from the family of dynamic, deterministic, deductive models, the lumped parameter approach was used to construct a model for competitive ability of cyanobacteria in one of the lakes.
