Guidelines on the Selection and Design of Messages for Changeable Message Signs

The report presents guidelines on the design of changeable message sign (CMS)messages for use in freeway corridors for incident management and route diversion. It is a companion to Report No. FHWA/TX-92/1232-9, which is a primer on the characteristics that affect the design, use and operation of CMSs, and which provides guidelines on the selection of the appropriate type of CMS displays.
