The Argentine textile industry has been one of the most depressed segments ofeconomic activity in the last several years. Recently, the Government of Argentina has taken steps to lower inflation, open the market to foreign competition, and reduce its holding of state companies through privatization. These policies are having an effect, and inflation has been considerably slowed which is increasing purchasing power. In addition, domestic demand for apparel is increasing slightly but steadily, and as a result, there is an increase in the importation of fabrics and apparel. In the first quarter of 1991 imports of fabrics and apparel increased 500 percent over the same period in 1990. It is estimated that imports will reach a value of more than $30 million dollars in the first half of this year.
