摘要

This instructional module was developed to provide engineering faculty andstudents with information on occupational safety and health concerns inherent to every electrical system. The first unit introduces students to the importance of safety in dealing with electrical systems and basic electrical engineering concepts. Unit two discusses the concepts of electric shock and inadvertent activation of equipment. Unit three studies the consequences of electricity acting as an ignition source. Unit four introduces pertinent electrical safety standards, the organizations which produce them, and professional liability for not applying the standards in one's work practices. The fifth unit concerns the importance of systems safety analysis in the design of electrical systems. The appendix contains copies of NIOSH Alerts dealing with electrocutions from contact between cranes and power lines, the use of portable metal ladders near overhead power lines, preventing grain auger electrocutions, preventing fatalities among workers who contact electrical energy, and preventing electrocutions due to damaged receptacles and connectors.
