According to the public opinion in Sweden vacuum cleaners can negativelyinfluence the indoor environment. The main problem is particles generated from vacuum cleaners. An allergic person in Sweden can get a certificate from a medical adviser, where it says that the person needs a central vacuum cleaner. The certificate gives the allergic person right to an allowance for the costs related to installing a central vacuum cleaner. The objective with this project has been to evaluate particle levels for different vacuum cleaning system. Measurements have been made in the laboratory and in dwellings. The following results were achieved: there is an agreement between the test results from laboratory tests and the tests in the dwellings; the conventional (not HEPA) filtersystem in the vacuum cleaners had a great influence on particles less than 0.5 micrometers; the contribution of particles from a good portable vacuum cleaner with HEPA-filter is similar to the one from a central vacuum cleaner; and the technical documentation regarding particle emission is poor from manufacturers of vacuum cleaners.
