The author found low levels of collagen and elastin mRNAs that were comparable incontrol rats and rats exposed for 20 months to 1.0 ppm ozone. In contrast, when the author examined lungs from rats exposed for two months to 1.0 ppm ozone, he found enhanced levels of mRNAs that code for collagen and elastin when compared with control rats. The absence of increased collagen and elastin mRNA levels after 20 months suggests that the genes that code for these proteins were not
