Building Analysis Files to Study Medicaid-Financed Deliveries and Birth Outcomes

The purpose of this report is to provide a detailed review of methodologiesemployed to identify deliveries in claims databases and techniques for linking delivery claims to vital records. In Chapter II, a brief overview of the data source is provided. In Chapter III, the initial methodology is described. Chapter IV provides data on modifications/supplements to the initial methodology for identifying deliveries; examples from seven studies are described. In Chapter V, recommended methods for identifying delivery claims in both inpatient and outpatient files are outlined. Chapter VI and VII describe methodologies used and recommended approaches to link delivery claims with vital records. Finally, Chapter VIII provides a brief summary of the report as well as conclusions.
