Walk-Through Survey Report: Control Technology for Mine Assay Laboratories atRabbit Creek Mine, Winnemucca, Nevada

A study was conducted to document and evaluate effective technologies for thecontrol of potential health hazards at the Mine Assay Laboratories for Rabbit Creek Mine (SIC-8734) located in Winnemucca, Nevada. The company was involved in gold mining and employed about 230 workers, eight of whom worked in the assay laboratory operation, performing about 100 fire assay samples per day. Potential hazards included exposure to lead (7439921), crystalline silica (14808607), respirable dust, mercury (7439976) and arsenic (7440382). The company used local exhaust ventilation and partial enclosures in the sample preparation flux mixing, and fire assay areas. HEPA filtered half mask respirators were worn during hazardous tasks.
