Removal of Scattered Surface Waves Using Multicomponent Seismic Data

In earlier papers, we have discussed an inverse scattering method for removingscattered surface waves from seismic data. This method is based on the estimation of a suitable shallow scattering model by a data-fitting procedure using as many data as possible. This scattering model is subsequently used to compute and remove the scattered surface waves for each source-receiver pair separately. We now extend the method to multicomponent data, in which case differences in both phase velocity and state of polarization are utilized to distinguish between surface waves and body waves. In contrast to polarization filtering methods, our method does not require assumptions about specific polarization characteristics (like the ellipticity) in order to separate the surface and body waves.
