Domestic mine production of rare earths decreased in 1993. The domestic economycontinued to recover slowly during the year and inflation rose a modest 2.5%. Estimated domestic apparent consumption decreased 21%; however, earnings by the major domestic processor reportedly increased amid a slight decline in sales. Demand increased for rare earths used in petroleum fluid cracking catalysts, automotive catalytic converters, permanent magnets, and television and lighting phosphors. Demand decreased for rare earths in automotive UV glass applications.
