摘要

The objective of the report is to determine whether there are racial differences211u001ein illness severity on admission for premature newborn infants independent of 211u001egestational age. The study populations consisted of all African American and 211u001eCaucasian singleton infants with gestational ages less than 34 weeks admitted to 211u001ethe neonatal intensive care unit at the Brigham and Women's Hospital between 211u001eDecember 1994 and November 1995. Illness severity was measured using a neonatal 211u001eintensive care unit at the Brigham and Women's Hospital between December 1994 and 211u001eNovember 1995. Illness severity was measured using a neonatal severity of illness 211u001escore, the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology (SNAP score). SNAP is a 211u001ephysiologic scoring system that scores the worst physiologic derangements in each 211u001eorgan system in the first 12 hours of life. It is an objective measure of 211u001eneonatal illness severity with scores ranging from 0 (healthy) to 42 (most 211u001eseverely ill). Student t tests x(sup 2) analysis and Fisher's exact tests were 211u001eused to assess statistical significance. Linear and logistic regression analyses 211u001ewere used to examine associations while controlling for confounding factors.
