Successful Use of Natural Gas in Electric Generation. Final Report

This reprt describes the gas and electric industries' operational requirementsand constraints, economic objectives, and business arrangements that affect gas use in electric generation; the tools that are available to organizations in the two industries to help meet the stringent requirements of gas-fired electric generating units; the implications of changes underway in the gas and electric industry (restructuring and increasing competition) for gas use in electric generation; the opportunities for technology to contribute to overcome the challenges when using gas in electric generation; and the regulatory impediments, attitudes and business practices that impede gas use in electric generation. The report also describes three specific case studies where gas is being used successfully in electric generations: two in areas where gas has long been used in electric generation (Texas and Florida) and one where extensive gas use in electric generation is relatively new (New England).
