U.S. Exports Reach Record $59.8 Bilion in Fiscal 1996--U.S. agricultural exportsreached a record $59.8 billion in fiscal 1996, 10 percent higher than the previous year. Exports surged because of strong bulk commodities and continued growth in high-value products. However, exports slowed considerably during the last quarter of the fiscal year (July-September 1996) because of the sluggish sales of red meat, feed grains, and cotton. Exports during the last quarter were only 3 percent higher than the same quarter a year earlier, compared with a 13-percent gain during the first three quarters. Despite the late-year slowdown, exports reached record levels to most major country markets.
