Manual Headway Control Experiments Conducted under Test Track and Open Road211 Driving Conditions. A Report on the First Year's Activities

The report documents a series of experiments designed to identify the dynamic211u001ebehavior of drivers controlling headway behind a lead vehicle. The experiments 211u001ewere performed on both a test track and the open highway. Time series were 211u001erecorded during relatively periods of vehicle following. The main recorded 211u001evariables included headway distance to the lead vehicle, following vehicle 211u001evelocity, and driver throttle activity. FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis 211u001eprocedures were used to identify transfer functions of driver/vehicle response to 211u001echanges in headway distance with respect to the lead vehicle.
