U.S. Postal Service: Information on Post Office Closures, Appeals and Affected211 Communities

This briefing report responds to the request for information on the Postal211u001eService's closure of post offices. Local post offices have long been a part of 211u001eAmerican culture and business, but they have become increasingly expensive for 211u001ethe Postal Service to maintain. Nevertheless, the Postal Reorganization Act of 211u001e1970 provides that no small post office can be closed for economic reasons alone. 211u001eIn 1976, Congress added provisions to the 1970 act to govern whether and how the 211u001eService is to close post offices. (2) the number of post offices closed since 211u001e1970, (3) the number of proposed post office closures appealed to the independent 211u001ePostal Rate Commission (PRC) and the disposition of those appeals, and (4) 211u001eselected attributes of affected communities for fiscal years 1995 and 1996.
