Research in the authors' field of materials processing continues actively. Theauthors are participating in the SULA energy program of the basic metal industry. Applications of neural networks in the cold rolling of steel is a new area of increased activity. Visiting professor Laszlo Cser of the Bay Zoltan Institute in Hungary has agreed to join the authors in order to support their activities concerning a recently started Brite-Euram project on neural networks in the rolling of steel. European collaboration is carried out e.g. in networks studying the application of solar energy and simulation of the forging of materials. Atomic force microscopy and hard thin films and coatings from diamond to TiN are also studied.
