Seventy-two papers were given and underscored the importance of cooperation inpreserving America's fossil heritage through expanding scientific knowledge and developing strategies for fossil protection. The presentations illustrated the depth and scope of work being conducted in the areas of research, education, curation, law enforcement, and information management. The gathering facilitated debates on the different levels of protection needed for vertebrate fossils as compared with invertebrate fossils and paleoflora. Compelling interpretive and educational programs suggested creative ways to make science assessible and relevant to the public. Computerized approaches to collection management and paleontological databases demonstrated how paleontology can be made available via the Information Superhighway. A discussion of partnerships emphasized how public and private organizations can work together to accomplish mutual goals.
