The etherification isoamylenes 2-methyl-1-butene (2M1B) and 2-methyl-2-butene(2M2B) with ethanol was studied in liquid phase using a strong cation exchange resin as catalyst in a plug flow reactor. The conversion of the isoamylenes with ethanol to 2-ethoxy-methylbutanes (TAEE) was appreciably lower than that with methanol to 2-methoxy-2-methylbutane (TAME). Above 333 K the etherification was limited by the theromodynamic equilibrium. The reaction equilibrium constants for the liquid phase formation of TAME and TAEE were determined experimentally in the temperature range 323-363 K. The experimental equilibrium constants are presented as a function of temperature. At 333 K the constants for the formation of TAME were 39.6 (2M1B) and 4.1 (2M2B) and those for TAEE 17.4 (2M1B) and 1.7 (2M2B). The experimental enthalpy changes for the formation of TAME were -33.6 kJ/mol (2M1B) and -26.8 kJ/mol (2M2B), and those for the formation of TAEE -35.2 kJ/mol (2M1B) and -27.3 kJ/mol (2M2B).
