Cruise Report: RV Ocean Alert Cruise A2-98-SC Mapping the Southern California Continental Margin, March 26 through April 11, 1998, San Diego to Long Beach, California.

The major objective of cruise A2-98 was to map portions of the southern California continental margin, including mapping in detail US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) ocean dumping sites. Mapping was accomplished using a high-resolution multibeam mapping system. The cruise was a jointly funded project between the USEPA and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The USEPA is specifically interested in a series of ocean dump sites off San Diego, Newport Beach, and Long Beach that require high-resolution base maps for site monitoring purposes. The USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program has several on-going projects off southern California that lack highprecision base maps for a variety of ongoing geological studies.
