As part of a two year project supported by the Swedish Council for Work Life211u001eResearch, two methods for the determination of the fire characteristics have been 211u001eapplied to a series of 8 hydraulic fluids in order to obtain data about the fire 211u001ebehavior of these fluids. The results of this comparison show that both methods 211u001egive a good indication of the fire behavior of the fluids but that the small 211u001escale method (ISO 15029-2) is less dependent on the viscosity of the fluid than 211u001ethe large scale method (ISO 15029-3). This is due to the method of creating the 211u001espray of fluid for ignition. In the small scale test a very well defined, pre-211u001emixed, spray of small droplets (with a narrow distribution of diameters) is 211u001ecreated using an aspiration method with a flow of air pushing the fluid through 211u001ethe nozzle. This spray gives a worst case burning behavior with even reltively 211u001einflammable fluids burning. In the large scale method a well defined spray of 211u001efluid is created using a swirl nozzle. The spray is not premixed and the 211u001edistribution of droplet sizes is broader.
