The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a211u001erequest for technical assistance from the Department of the Interior, Mineral 211u001eManagement Services (MMS), located in Santa Maria, California. According to the 211u001erequest, inspectors of Offshore Operations and Safety were concerned about 211u001erespiratory protection against hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Specific concerns were 211u001ewith the Robertshaw (air capsule) 5-minute, hooded, continuous-flow, escape self-211u001econtained breathing apparatus (ESCBA) and the general use of hooded ESCBAs. On 211u001eAugust 11 and 12, 1996, NIOSH investigators conducted a site visit on platfom 211u001e'Irene', an offshore drilling rig owned and operated by Torch Operating Company 211u001e(TOC). Platform Irene is located on the Outer Continental Shelf of the Pacific 211u001eOcean, 5-7 miles off the coast of Santa Maria, California. It is designed to 211u001esupport both drilling and production operations. At the time of the NIOSH site 211u001evisit, platform Irene was in the production phase and accommodated 15 workers.
