摘要

In design codes, nail spacing are mainly determined to avoid splitting during211u001enailing. In case of predrilled holes, and steel-to-timber connections increased 211u001enail density is allowed. This may lead to the exceeding of the timber capacity in 211u001ethe joint area, and to the unfavorable brittle block tearing failure with reduced 211u001ecapacity. The first models to predict the brittle behavior of nailed joints has 211u001ebeen based on the principle of reducing the effecting number of nails after a 211u001echanging point. A model presented by Kangas et al. (1996) suggests that the 211u001ecapacity of a nailed connection with given nail spacings and distances depends on 211u001ethe nail capacities up to a certain joint length, after which the block tearing 211u001efailure can occur. The capacity of the joint is limited by the sum of the nail 211u001ecapacities and by the sum of the tensile and shear capacities of timber in the 211u001ejoint area.
