Plane Wave in a Decomposable Bi-Anisotropic Medium

The class of decomposable bi-anisotropic media was recently defined as being211u001ecomposed of media in which any electromagnetic field can be decomposed in two 211u001eindividual electromagnetic fields satisfying certain polarization conditions. 211u001eAlso it was shown that, for a medium in this class, the fourth-order Helmholtz 211u001edeterminant operator governing the basic electromagnetic fields can be 211u001efactorized, i.e., expressed as a product of two second-order operators. In the 211u001epresent paper, this property is applied to finding analytical solutions for the 211u001edispersion equation governing the propagation of plane waves in a decomposable 211u001emedium. Also, polarizations of the eigenwaves are determined in analytic form. As 211u001ean appendix, conditions for the medium dyadics of the decomposable bi-anisotropic 211u001emedium are derived for the case when the medium is lossless.
