Year 2000 Computing Crisis: State Department Needs to Make Fundamental211 Improvements to Its Year 2000 Program

The report responds to your request that we review the Department of State's211u001eprogress in solving its Year 2000 computer systems problem. The Department of 211u001eState relies on a variety of information systems and networks to help it carry 211u001eout its responsibilities and support business functions, such as financial 211u001emanagement, medical assistance, visa and passport issuance, diplomatic agreements 211u001eand communications, and personnel. We assessed (1) the overall status of State's 211u001eefforts to identify and correct its date-sensitive systems and (2) the 211u001eappropriateness of State's strategy and actions to correct its Year 2000 211u001eproblems.
