Meth Matters: Report on Methamphetamine Users in Five Western Cities

This study used the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) program to document211u001emethamphetamine use and its consequences among arrestees. The program began in 211u001e1987 to monitor drug use trends among offenders and identify potential drug 211u001eepidemics. The interview obtains sociodemographic information about arrestees and 211u001esolicits information about their current and historical drug use and drug 211u001etreatment experience. Participants are asked to volunteer a confidential urine 211u001esample for analysis. This summary describes the results of interviews with 211u001epersons arrested and booked into detention facilities in five cities: Los 211u001eAngeles, San Diego, and San Jose in California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Portland, 211u001eOregon. All of those interviewed reported using methamphetamine within 30 days of 211u001ethe time of the interview. Interviews were conducted in four ADAM quarterly 211u001eperiods, from October 1996 through September 1997.
