Postconviction DNA Testing: Recommendations for Handling Requests

In recent years, technological progress in DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) testing211u001ehas made DNA evidence a predominant forensic technique for identifying criminals 211u001ewhen biological tissues are left at a crime scene. DNA testing on samples such as 211u001esaliva, skin, blood, hair, or semen not only helps to convict, but also serves to 211u001eexonerate. The sophisticated technology makes it possible to obtain conclusive 211u001eresults in cases in which previous testing had been inconclusive. Postconviction 211u001etesting will be requested not only in cases in which DNA testing was never done, 211u001ebut also in cases in which the more refined technology may result in an 211u001eindisputable answer. It is hoped this report will help participants through the 211u001epostconviction process.
